Our next evening trip was to Burgos. Like Leon, Burgos is known for it's Gothic cathedral. It is a Unesco World Heritage-listed cathedral which began as a Romanesque church in the 1200's and was completed as a Gothic church in the 15th century.
On our way to the Cathedral from the bus stop, we walked along the river and then entered the city through one of the main gates Arco de Santa Maria. It was once the main gate to the old city and is part of the 14th century walls.
Unfortunately, we did not have a lot of time in Burgos. The train station ended up being 7 km away from the city, so we had to take a bus into the city. By the time we arrived to the city center, we only had about an hour and a half before we had to catch the bus back. I had given everyone maps of the city, so after we saw the cathedral, we went to the Plaza Mayor and decided to split up. With a group of 20, everyone wants to do something different, so it is easier this way.
Some students wanted to go shopping, so they went and did that. Some students did not want to go shopping, so they came with me to see the Castillo de Burgos. It didn't look far away according to the map- but the map doesn't show elevation. After hiking up hill for about 20 minutes, we finally got to the castle. The castle, dating back from the 9th century, was blown up by Napoleon's troops in 1813, so it didn't end up being much of a sight to see. However, the hike up the hill wasn't for nothing, because we ended up finding a lookout spot with great views over the whole town.
