Like Burgos, Segovia's train station was about 5km away from the city center, so we had to take a bus from the train station. The bus dropped us off right next to one of Segovia's most popular sights, El Acueducto. These Roman aqueducts were built in the 1st century AD. They were used to bring water into the city from the mountains that were 15km away. One of the reasons that this aqueduct is so impressive is because it is not only more than 15km long, but it is built with over 20,000 uneven blocks and without the use of any mortar to hold the blocks together.
From the aqueduct, we walked through the city to the Plaza Mayor and to the Cathedral. This Cathedral is another Spanish Gothic cathedral. It was started in the 1500's and took almost 200 years to complete.
From the cathedral, we continued through the city and towards the Alcázar Castle.
This castle looks like something from a fairy-tale. They say that this castle inspired Walt Disney's vision of Sleeping Beauty's castle. It originally was a fortress during the Roman times. It was rebuilt and expanded in the 13th and 14th centuries. It then burned down in 1862, and today it is a reconstruction of the original.
Some of the group took a tour of the inside of the castle and others took the 200 plus winding stairs to the top of the tower. The climb was well worth it!
